Cholesterol can be a tricky thing because there are good types of cholesterol and bad types of cholesterol.  Cholesterol itself is a compound in the body which helps to transport fat cells.  Since your blood cannot properly carry these fat cells on their own, the cholesterol compound will do this.  Bad cholesterol is the type that carries these fat cells to different points of your body.  Good cholesterol is the type that moves these cells back toward the liver, where they can be properly processed.  When your body is suffering from too much cholesterol, it means that there is an excess of the cholesterol that is taking the fat around your body.

These cells will start to build up in your arteries, making it harder for the blood to move effectively through your body.  This will make your heart start to work harder and can actually tire you out faster.  The weaker your heart gets, the more likely you are to have a number of heart disease issues that could eventually lead toward a heart attack or a stroke.  Therefore, when you have high cholesterol, it is important that you work toward eliminating the bad cholesterol from your body, which carries the fat around, and build up the good cholesterol, which helps to remove the presence from your body.

As you may expect, when you have a high count of bad cholesterol, you will immediately need to take steps to start removing this presence from your body.  Thankfully, there are a number of heart-healthy options that you can start to use to get on the track of living a strong, healthy lifestyle again.  The first thing you can start to fix is your diet.

Foods which are high in soluble fat need to go.  This is the type of fat which will commonly be carried around by the bad cholesterol presence in your body.  The more you lower this, the less fat you will be introducing into your body and the bad types of cholesterol will start to go away.  Less than 10% of the fat calories that you consume should come from soluble fat, especially when you are on a diet for lowering cholesterol .  Learning how to evaluate these calories and always look at the nutritional content before you eat it should be an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Soluble fiber is just another example of heart-healthy foods that you can consume.  Soluble fiber is a type of nutrient which works on lowering the presence of cholesterol absorption in your intestines.  This will help to lower the amount of bad cholesterol which is present in your body overall.  Typically, soluble fiber is found in whole grains and oatmeal.  You can add even more fiber to your diet by introducing more fruits, which will usually hold an additional concentration of fiber.

Eating foods which are lower in fat will naturally be an important part of lowering cholesterol.  This goes for more than just saturated fat.  Foods which are low in fat overall are typically the foods which contain higher fiber and other healthy elements.  These would be fat free dairy products, lean meats, vegetables, fish, and fruits.  Incorporating all of these elements into your diet will help you begin to shed the presence of cholesterol.

There are some forms of medication that you can use to help fight the presence of bad cholesterol in your body.  Only your doctor can determine if your cholesterol is high enough to warrant the use of this drug therapy to help combat your problem.  Once you start a regiment of medicine to fight cholesterol, you will need to strictly follow it to ensure the highest rate of success.

More natural methods should be considered to fight heart disease from bad cholesterol as well.  Exercise is commonly used in a heart-healthy lifestyle.  The more you move and get your heart pumping and your blood flowing, the better your heart will perform.  Aerobic exercise is very highly recommended for helping fight heart disease and with lowering cholesterol.  This exercise will perform a number of functions.  Not only will it help raise the good cholesterol, which in turn helps lower the bad cholesterol, but it can help the body lose weight and one's metabolism will be raised.  This will help your body with processing food and other nutrients in a healthier way and can aid in rejecting more of the saturated fat in the food that you eat. 

Too much cholesterol will obvious present health problems into your life.  You want to be strong and healthy for as long as possible, so watching how much bad cholesterol you have should be important in keeping you active.  A heart-healthy lifestyle will give you the best chance for a long, healthy life.
